Standard App Fees Set at 15%

For most developers, Apple is proposing a 15% commission on purchases made through external links. This aims to allow users to make purchases outside the App Store, but with a fee attached.

Special Discounts for Select Developers

Developers enrolled in specific Apple programs, like the Video Partner Program or News Partner Program, could see reduced rates. Small businesses might only pay a 5% commission, while others could pay 10%.

Subscription Renewals Also Affected

The proposed changes extend to subscription renewals, which would also be subject to a 10% commission under the new structure. This could impact recurring revenue streams for developers.

Legal Pressure Forces Apple's Hand

Apple had sought to delay this proposal, hoping the Supreme Court would rule on a related case. However, the court's rejection forced Apple to submit its commission structure to the U.S. District Court of Northern California.

Apple Cites Investment Costs

The tech giant argues these fees are necessary to recoup investments in the tools, technology, and services that maintain its App Store and software. They also compared their rates to Google Play's 20% link-out fee.
